Teenagers are traditionally seen as the most enthusiastic users of social media, Facebook in particular. In recent months, however, analytics have shown that young users are becoming tired of the social network, especially in developed markets.

Apparently, the trend has been noticed by the platform itself, as Facebook has referred to the fact as well. Some of Facebook´s younger users are using the site less regularly than before or are even changing to other forms of communication and entertainment entirely, the company noted in its annual report. The social media giant admitted that Facebook is seeing lower engagement levels from young consumers, which might have an impact on business, the report added.

But why are teenagers deserting Facebook? The simple answer is because they no longer find it cool. Instead they are increasingly attracted to various apps such as Instagram and Snapchat. Apps are more flexible and more convenient to use via mobile devices and this appeals to young consumers, the Daily Mail said.

Whether the trend is going to have a real effect on Facebook is hard to tell at this point. Meanwhile, the social network site is still trying to improve its service. Its latest innovation is set to roll out on 7 March and is expected to reveal a new layout built around a grid or tile interface, similar to the one users have already seen with the Windows 8 operating system. It is still not known if the new interface will be introduced for all versions of the site or just for the mobile version.
